Obituary for Richard Hurley:
Son of the late Bridget and James Hurley. Born in Tuam, County Galway, Ireland, on October 30, 1940. One of eight children, Richard is predeceased by siblings Dolores and Ann. He passed away peacefully at home in Farmingdale, NY on May 15th surrounded by loving family after a brief battle with cancer.
Richard was a devoted and loving husband, married 55 years to Catherine (Kay), and cherished father of daughters Stacey Kowalski (John), Kristen Sweeney (Patrick), and Heather Hurley. Beloved grandfather and role model to his six grandchildren, Daniel, Jack, Emily, Niamh, Majella and Ciara. Special brother-in-law to Gerry Finnegan (Mike), and uncle to Denise (Joe) and Katie (Tim) and beloved great uncle to Reilly, Isabel, Sam, Charlie, and Fiona in New York. One of eight children, Richard is predeceased by siblings Dolores and Ann. Survived by siblings Bernadette Peace (Tony), Pat Hurley (Anne), James Hurley (Helen), Sheila Hegarty (Walter), and Ted Hurley (Vi). He was an admired brother, father-in-law, brother-in-law and uncle, a loyal friend, and someone whom everyone loved to spend time with. He was an animal lover whose home never went without a family pet.
Richie retired as a respected Lieutenant from Triboro Bridge and Tunnel Authority, and was known by many officers as “everyone’s favorite Lieutenant”. He served as an officer in his union, and was a skilled firearms instructor. His love of his Irish heritage never once left him after emigrating to the US in 1960. He loved receiving family and friends from Ireland and beyond, and insisted on picking up visitors from the airport and being their personal tour guide. He was a true gentleman, a diehard Jeopardy fan, who loved being surrounded by family and friends.
Richie was a man of humor, kindness, and generosity who spoke signature catch phrases such as “What a wonderful person and grand human being”, or “Not to worry!”, no matter how big or small a situation may have been. To know him was to love him and he will be dearly missed. He brought joy to the lives of so many throughout his life, and for that we remember him with loving memories.
Richie will be laid to rest on Saturday, June 6, 2020 at St. Charles Cemetery in Farmingdale. A memorial mass will be scheduled at a later date when family and friends can celebrate his love of life together. Always in our hearts.
