Obituary for Matthew Peter Vespe

Matthew Peter Vespe 91, of Louisville, passed away on Wednesday, January 1, 2020. Born in the town of Acceturra, located in the Basilicata region of Italy, Matthew and his parents Giuseppe and Theresa, migrated to the US in 1940 and settled in Astoria NY.

In 1946 he enlisted in the US Navy and served our country from 1946-49 stationed on the USS Vulcan. In 1952 he married Margaret Giacomino and lived in Corona NY until moving the family to Farmingdale, NY in 1974. He worked for the NYC Highway department as a supervisor until his retirement in 1987 and in 2006 Matthew and Margaret moved with their daughter Margaret and her family to Louisville KY.

“Matty” was very athletic, an avid bowler, bowling many 300 games, and a passionate and very knowledgeable sports enthusiast.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Margaret Vespe; children, Margaret "Margie" Morrison (William), Robert F. Vespe (Maryrose) and Joseph A. Vespe (Laura); 5 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial was con-celebrated at 11AM Monday January 6, 2020, at St Aloysius Catholic Church in Louisville KY. Matthew’s remains have been transported home to NY and will repose at the McCourt & Trudden Funeral Home, 385 Main Street, Farmingdale, NY 11735 (516) 249-1303; Friday January 10th from 6-9 PM only.

On Saturday January 11th a short service (Chapel or Graveside weather dependent) is scheduled for 11:00AM at the St. Charles Resurrection Cemetery in Farmingdale. Before proceeding to St. Charles visitation at McCourt & Trudden will be available from 9:00 AM until leaving for the Cemetery. If anyone wishes to join us for the procession to St. Charles please arrive at the Funeral home before 10:00 AM.
