Obituary for John Joseph Wilcox Jr.

John J. Wilcox passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 27, 2021 at Mary Ann Tully Hospice Inn in Melville. John was born on January 21, 1929 to John and Margaret Wilcox in Astoria. He was eager to serve his country during WWII and joined the Navy at 16 years old where he valiantly served in the Sea Bee’s in the South Pacific.
John married the love of his life, Phyllis. They were just shy of celebrating 69 years of marriage. He was a 2nd generation Steamfitter in Local 638 where he was in the very first Apprenticeship class of 1947. John went on to become a Business Agent for 18 years and accomplished 74 years of membership in his Local. He enjoyed playing golf, traveling and making people laugh with his amusing stories and jokes.
John is survived by his wife Phyllis, son John and daughter-in-law Nancy, daughter Celeste, daughter Valerie and son-in-law Bruce, son Brendan and daughter-in-law Catherine, as well as 11 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, one sister and one grandchild.
We are comforted knowing that Pop is no longer suffering, he is now without pain, reunited with his loved ones who went before him, and resting in Eternal peace.
“For God so loved the world that He gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life”. John 3:16
