Obituary

Thank you for allowing me this opportunity to remind you of our Dad, James Stanley Martin. Pop, Jim, big Jim, Jimbo, uncle Jim, Grandpa, gramps, Before he was our Dad, he was a son to John and Marie Martin. His dad passed away when he was a young boy, and pop would learn early in life how to care for others while developing a determined work attitude. He was the middle Brother to John and Joseph, born in Teaneck New Jersey who would later on grow up in Washington heights. That is where he learned about cars and tools having gone to a vocational high school. He met my mom, Helen, during these years, and they began what would be a life long relationship.
Mom and dad married. It was in October of 1964 and of course it was on Halloween. This kind of went with their eccentric personalities, as they were full of life.
James Stanley Jr. was born less than a year later in August, Charles Joseph November, and Me, Timothy Patrick December. With three boys, mom and dad had their hands full growing up just over the Whitestone bridge in the Bronx projects of Castle Hill. Pop worked days at Con Edison, a job introduced by my Godfather, Bob. At night he worked at an auto body shop. We can’t remember our dad ever having only one job. Their goal was simple, to provide a life full of love and happiness for their family of five.
Our family would instantly double in size if they moved to the Island. After all, 114 Michele avenue was directly across from 115 Michele where mom’s sister Mary, husband Bob, Cathy and Robert already lived. It’s this bigger family that would help define each one of us in the years ahead.
In 1973, Pete joined us to complete our family of 6, or 10 depending how you look at it. 114 was full of life and energy. There were so many happy times as we broke in the cape cod on Michele avenue. Pop was truly proud of his family and home. He was the King of his Castle,
Each one of us boys would get married, to Christine, Joanne, Jennifer, and Laura, Together we would turn our houses into a homes with families of our own.
They were so excited to travel and meet new people at new places, it was their re birth, a spiritual renaissance of sorts. After months on the road, they were even more excited to come back to their grand-babies. TJ, Kayla, Victoria, Meaghan,
Erin, Christopher, Timothy, Sean, Laine and Ryan. This is where their true heart and sole was, and is. We are so fortunate to have had our own children experience so many of those RV getaways at Nickerson beach, Wildwood, Strawberry park, Smith Point, Battle Row, and even the driveway. This is where pop really shined and came into his own. He loved the gadgets and sharing them with the grandchildren.
A parent’s dream is to give your children more than you had, I can say that this has been the case in each one of the Martin Boys. A policeman, fireman, soldier, educator, each with a successful family of their own. Mission accomplished mom and pop.
