Obituary for Carl A DeNobrega

Carl was born on Dec. 10,1923, in the Harlem section of Manhattan, New York. His mother Adalaide Figueira De Nobrega and father, Clement De Nobrega came to America from British Guiana in 1922. Carl was blessed with his sister Mary (Norma) and brother, Philip. Norma married a wonderful man from the Philadelphia area, Earl Heffernan and they were blessed with five beautiful children. Philip, the youngest married Anita and they were blessed with three gracious children. During the depression Carl gravitated to sports where he excelled in all. At the age of 17 and just before World War II, Carl joined the navy. He served aboard the USS Cincinnati chasing German subs in the Atlantic. In 1943, he was one of the original crew members of the largest battleship class in American history, The battleship, USS New Jersey. He was promoted to Machinist's Mate First Class Petty Officer and fought the Japanese in the Pacific arena. As the "Jersey" was the flag ship Admiral William Bull Halsey was on board. One day Carl was chatting with another sailor on deck and casually mentioned that Halsey was a "good old bastard". Not knowing Halsey was right behind him, he got a tap on the shoulder and turned to see the Admiral. Now Halsey with his stern voice said, "what makes you think I am old".
This has been a tail my father has taken with him his whole life and cherished it. By the way, The Battleship USS New Jersey is the most decorated ship in American History.

After the war Carl was blessed coming home unscathed. in 1947 He met Veronica Bridget Geraghty. She was one of 12 children born to John F Geraghty and Mary Healy. Carl had to get the approval of 6 brothers and five sisters before taking the hand of Veronica in marriage November 16, 1947. Carl joined the NYC Dept. of Correction in 1949 and the NYC Police Dept. in 1951. Carl was blessed with three children, Carol, Gary and Gail. Sadly, he lost Carol in 2004. He was blessed with two grand children, Carleen and Patrick. He has numerous nieces and nephews on both sides of the family who have all stayed in touch over the years.
Carl completed his 30 yr career with the Dept. in 1979. He was an avid golfer playing in some of the most prestigious amateur events in the metropolitan area. He had three hole in ones and was one of two golfers to hold the course record at the oldest public golf course in America. In August of 1966, Carl shot a 66 and 64 in two consecutive rounds of golf. 64 is the record score for Van Cortlandt Golf Course in the Bronx, New York.
Carl moved from the Bronx where he brought up his family to the lovely hamlet of Mamaroneck, NY. He moved to Calabash NC where the weather was warmer and he could enjoy more golf.
Carl was gifted in so many ways. He was a leader without trying to be one. Where ever he went, people wanted to be with him. He was loved by anyone who ever met him. He had people visiting him all of the time and always made his home welcome to them all.
In his last couple of years he became a member of the Elks Lodge in Calabash NC where once again he was always the center of attraction. He loved people and loved the action of always getting out of the house. Never did he want to stay in. At home Carl was blessed these past couple of years with being close to his son Gary and daughter in law Jacqui who were there for him when ever needed. His daughter Gail moved in with Carl and helped maintain. He was also joined by ZuZu, his furry companion who was always by his side.
Carl led a simple but full and honest life. He always to his children, "Do things the right way and you will never have to worry". Those words were the way my dad lived his life and his children followed. Carl passed away on November 19, 2021.
